What is Mastermind? A mastermind group is a peer-to-peer mentoring group used to help members solve their problems with input and advice from the other group members. The concept was coined in 1925 by author Napoleon Hill in his book The Law of Success and described in more detail in his 1937 book Think and Grow Rich.
We learn differently, but one of the best ways to learn is through a mastermind where participants share knowledge, information, and experience in a group conversation.
According to the learning pyramid, in participatory teaching like mastermind group sessions, there is high learning retention at least 50 to 70% compared to passive teaching methods like webinars.
Research on the forgetting curve (Figure below) shows that people will have forgotten an average of 50 percent of the information you presented within one hour. Within 24 hours, they have forgotten an average of 70 percent of new information. Within a week, “forgetting” claims an average of 90 percent of it.

Some people remember it more or less, but in general, the situation is appalling. It is the dirty secret of corporate training. No matter how much you invest into training and development, nearly everything you teach to your employees will be forgotten. Indeed, although corporations spend 60 billion dollars a year on training, this investment is like pumping gas into a car that has a hole in the tank. All of your hard work simply drains away.
And it gets worse. Given that our employees forget most of what they learn, we should not hope that our training will transfer back to the workplace. After all, memory is a necessary condition for behavior change, and if your employees have forgotten the lessons of your leadership seminar, there is no reason to expect them to become more effective leaders back in the workplace.
In the Mastermind Group, we will be accountable for what we need to learn. So participants agreed to apply the learning immediately after they understand it. During the meeting, participants are asked about the result of the application of the study. Doing this increases the understanding that ultimately ends in behavioral change as a result of the learning.

About the topic: Developing the Leader Within You 2.0
Publisher’s Summary
In 1993, John C. Maxwell’s now-classic work revolutionized the way leaders are made. By examining the differences between leadership styles, Maxwell outlines principles for inspiring, motivating, and influencing others from any type of leadership position – including as a business executive, a church leader, a teacher, or even a parent.
Now, the author has returned to his bestseller to include the leadership insights and practices he has learned in the decades since the book first appeared. Thoroughly revised and with two additional chapters, Developing the Leader Within You 2.0 has updated these foundational principles and promises to provide both new listeners as well as longtime fans of the original book with the necessary wisdom to help any leader and organization succeed in fostering integrity, self-discipline, and effecting positive change.
Develop your vision. Develop your value. Develop the leader within you.
I read this book in 1993. At that time, I was already satisfied with what I do as a technical janitor. I just realized today, looking back, that this particular book has been very instrumental to my career and life success. It started to change my belief that I can be a leader. What a technical janitor, becoming a leader? That was the question in my head a long time ago.
The book created a strong desire in my heart to become a professional, so I go back to the campus as a working student. After graduating with a degree in BS in Engineering, things changed. I got promoted from the ranks – from a technical janitor to Department head. That was 31 years ago.
Now, I have multiple businesses and a certified John Maxwell Coach. I am leading about 200 business owners as a Managing Director of BNI (Business Networking International)- a referral business community in the MNL CBD Region of Makati and Muntinlupa.

One of my advocacies is helping young business owners, entrepreneurs, and professionals develop their leadership skills through the mastermind group.
